Fun Facts From The Sixties

The Dave Clark Five’s “Glad All Over” was billed by their US label as “the Mersey Sound with a Liverpool beat.” In fact, the group came from London.

‘I wish I hadn’t said that …’ ” The rest of the group is fine but the singer will have to go” ( Eric Easton taking over as The Rolling Stones’ manager in 1962 ) “We don’t like their sound. Groups of guitars are on the way out” (Mike Smith, Decca A&R manager, turning The Beatles down in 1962)

Legendary producer Joe Meek helped the Honeycombs to No.1 in 1964 with “Have I The Right” but after that they couldn’t get back into the Top 10. Having a female drummer was regarded as a “gimmick” in those days and Honey Lantree was easily the most interviewed member of the group, constantly fielding questions like “What’s it like to be a girl drummer/travel with all the guys?” etc.

“To Sir With Love”, the 1967 hit by Lulu went all the way to number one in the United States, where it would stay for 5 weeks. The record didn’t even chart in her homeland of Great Britain.

The Troggs’ ‘Wild Thing’ was produced in one take during 15 spare minutes at the end of a recording session.

Robin and Barry Gibb wrote “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart” for crooner Andy Williams. When he declined, the Bee Gees recorded the song themselves and scored the first of their nine number one records with it.

In 1963, artists managed by Brian Epstein placed 85 songs in the Top Ten of the British record charts.

Although it is often considered a Rock and Roll anthem, “My Generation” by The Who, only reached # 74 on the U.S. record chart.
